Why Mind Matters?
How we interact as families shapes how we think and feel! We want to better understand how teens and their caregivers reflect, collaborate, and talk about everyday life experiences, and how these meaningful conversations influence your brain and heart. During a 2 hour session, teens and caregivers will:
Teens and caregivers earn up to $60 EACH for participating. We are located at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. We also offer flexible scheduling to find a time and day that works best for you and your teen. |
Mind Matters is recruiting teens aged 12-17, AND their caregivers (18+) to participate in a collaborative study!

Testimonials
“I really enjoyed being part of the Mind Matters project! It was such a meaningful and supportive experience for both me and my child. I would tell other families that it’s great to be heard, to learn, and to feel truly seen and supported.”
“Black families need to get more involved [in research] because it gives us a chance to have a voice and to be seen as equal individuals. I highly recommend to get involved in Mind Matters to get a better sense of understanding and become a part of the community.”

How do we measure brain activity?
|
We use a wet cap called electroencephalography (EEG). This cap has small sponges and wires that we soak in warm water. To the right are videos of our lab staff applying the net to previous participants.
Our lab staff is trained to apply EEG nets on all hair types of varying lengths, styles, and textures. If you have additional questions about our process, please ask in the form below! |

How do we measure heart activity?
We use small sticky pads called electrocardiography (ECG) to measure your heart beat. We have you place them directly on your skin. These are very similar to what would be used in a doctor's office.
